Vortex Flow Meters

Vortex flow meters utilize the smallest strut in the industry, which allows for high levels of sensitivity and superior performance. Vortex flow meters are suitable for measuring steam, as well as a variety of liquids and gases.

Vortex Flow Meters

High Levels of Sensitivity. Superior Performance at Low Flow Rates.

Vortex flow meters offer many benefits in flow measurement applications, including simple installation and a wide turndown range.

  • Advanced Sensitivity. Built with the smallest strut in the industry, which allows for high levels of sensitivity and low pressure drop.
  • Exceptional Performance. Features an internal RTD and an external pressure sensor (optional) to compensate for changes in pressure and temperature to achieve measurement accuracy.
  • Durable Construction. Has no moving parts that require maintenance or repair, decreasing chance for malfunctions and increasing performance within a range of applications.

Measuring Principle

Vortex meters use a principle called the von Kármán effect to measure liquids, gases and vapors. In fluid dynamics, a Kármán vortex street is a repeating pattern of swirling vortices, caused by a process known as vortex shedding. As water (or another liquid, gas or vapor) flows past an obstacle, fluid separates and forms alternating differential pressure known as vortices.

How It Measures
How It Measures

Vortex meters measure by placing an obstruction (called a shredder bar) in the flow path, which creates vortices of alternating differential pressure. These vortices cause a small sensor device to oscillate with a frequency directly proportional to the velocity of the moving fluid. The sensing element then converts the oscillation rate into an electrical signal, which is converted into a quantifiable velocity reading.
