Bahrain Aquarium Enhances Water Quality Monitoring for Marine Life

Panoramic skyline and modern commercial buildings with empty circular square in Beijing, China.
Challenge

Managers at the Bahrain Aquarium required a reliable monitoring solution to track pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and temperature, replicating ocean conditions within a large indoor aquatic environment.

Solution

Q45R ORP Monitor
Q46P pH/Temperature Monitor

Results

Continuous monitoring enables a safe, stable habitat for marine life, while reducing routine maintenance and providing real-time data to support ongoing research and operational efficiency.

The Bahrain Aquarium is a 17-meter-tall, four-story cylindrical exhibit located inside the Mall of Dilmunia. As the first large-scale aquarium housed within a Middle Eastern shopping mall, the exhibit holds over 700,000 liters of saltwater and supports more than 2,700 marine species—including rays, sharks and tropical fish. Combining marine conservation, public engagement and entertainment, the aquarium presents a unique operational challenge: maintaining ocean-like water quality conditions in a commercial environment.

Maintaining Stability in a Complex Aquatic Environment

The health of marine life in aquariums depends on carefully controlled water quality. Even small changes in parameters like temperature, pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) can disrupt the balance of a closed aquatic system. For a high-traffic, high-visibility installation like the Bahrain Aquarium, dependable, real-time monitoring is essential—not only for marine health but also for operational efficiency and sustainability.

While most aquarium life support systems are built around circulation, filtration and aeration, their effectiveness depends on reliable sensors delivering accurate, up-to-the-minute data. The Bahrain Aquarium team sought a solution that would integrate seamlessly into its life support and automation systems to maintain optimal conditions—what aquarium professionals often refer to as the “heartbeat” of the system.

Designing a Smart Monitoring Approach

To deliver that level of insight and automation, the aquarium partnered with ELSS, an oceanarium specialist, and Badger Meter to implement a robust water quality monitoring system. The solution needed to:

  • Continuously monitor pH, ORP and temperature
  • Replicate natural marine conditions to support species health
  • Deliver real-time data to operators and researchers
  • Reduce maintenance frequency and overall operating costs

Badger Meter recommended the deployment of two key technologies: the Q45R ORP Monitor and the Q46P pH Monitor. Both units are known for their long-life sensors, durable design and minimal maintenance requirements—making them ideal for continuous use in saltwater environments.

Seamless Integration with Automation Systems

The monitors interface with the aquarium’s automation and control system using standard 4–20 mA outputs. This allows data on pH, ORP and temperature to be integrated into broader system operations, enabling real-time alerts and condition-based responses when preset thresholds are exceeded. Together, these instruments form a critical part of the aquarium’s life support strategy.

The Q45R ORP Monitor uses differential sensors designed for extended use in demanding environments, reducing sensor replacement and routine upkeep. ORP readings help operators assess sanitization levels in the tank, minimizing the risk of contamination.

The Q46P pH Monitor provides real-time pH and temperature data. pH fluctuations can stress or harm marine life, so accurate and timely readings are essential. With robust sensors and straightforward calibration, this system offers a reliable foundation for habitat stability.

Delivering Measurable Impact

Since installation, the Bahrain Aquarium has gained significant operational advantages. Real-time water quality data enables the team to:

  • Proactively adjust system conditions before issues escalate
  • Reduce labor tied to manual testing and calibration
  • Lower maintenance costs through less frequent sensor replacement
  • Collect data for marine research and animal care protocols

By implementing advanced monitoring through Badger Meter’s BlueEdge™ solution portfolio, the aquarium now operates with greater confidence, consistency and control.

Preserving Marine Life Through Smart Technology

For long-lived marine species that may remain in the aquarium for decades, environmental stability is critical. By deploying reliable, real-time monitoring solutions, the Bahrain Aquarium has taken an important step toward safeguarding the health of its marine population while improving efficiency and supporting long-term conservation goals.

Badger Meter continues to support facility teams worldwide with precision instrumentation that empowers smarter decision-making, optimized operations and measurable environmental impact.
