Geothermal HVAC Systems

Geothermal systems offer a highly efficient and sustainable approach to heating and cooling by leveraging the consistent temperatures found below the earth’s surface. By integrating advanced flow and energy monitoring technologies, building operators can maintain proper system balance, track energy use and detect issues such as leaks or inefficiencies. Continuous performance monitoring helps extend equipment life, reduce operating costs and support long-term energy and sustainability goals.

How Our Solutions Help

Continuous Flow Monitoring

Accurate flow data helps operators maintain proper system operation during heat transfer, both during summer rejection and winter extraction. Monitoring flow rates helps detect drops in performance and supports load management across the geothermal loop.

Energy Usage Tracking

Advanced metering helps convert flow rate and temperature data into thermal energy readings (BTU or TONN usage). This supports performance analysis, capacity planning and more efficient chiller staging throughout seasonal cycles.

Leak and Loss Detection

Monitoring make-up water lines helps identify losses within closed-loop geothermal systems. Detecting unexpected usage helps reduce water waste, prevent equipment wear and maintain long-term system reliability.

Performance Optimization

Reliable real-time data allows facilities teams to compare actual performance to design targets. Even slight deviations from design flow can significantly impact system efficiency, making accurate measurement critical for sustained performance.

Cooling Tower Blowdown

Manage water quality and cooling efficiency by accurately measuring blowdown rates. Flow meters calculate evaporation loss, cycles of concentration and water chemistry levels to help optimize chemical dosing and minimize scale buildup. This supports system longevity and reduces unnecessary water usage.

Chilled Water (Cooling) Systems

Precise flow and temperature monitoring are critical to staging chillers effectively in geothermal cooling systems. Meters convert this data into BTU or TONN usage, giving operators real-time insight into load demand. This helps determine when to activate or shut down additional chillers, optimizing energy use and system responsiveness.

Glycol/Hot Water (Heating)

Glycol/Hot water applications involve the measurement of the temperature difference of the heat exchange liquid (water and/or glycol) on heating system supply and return pipes, as well as the flow of the heat exchange liquid to calculate the amount of thermal energy used.

Make-up Water

Closed-loop geothermal systems should require minimal water input. Flow meters on make-up lines track incoming volume to detect leaks, evaporation or operational inefficiencies. Identifying abnormal consumption trends helps prevent long-term damage, reduce unplanned maintenance and support overall system efficiency.
