Advanced Flow Metering Technology Boosts HVAC Efficiency at a World-Class Stadium in the Middle East

Modern soccer stadium in Qatar built for extreme heat conditions with advanced infrastructure to support efficient cooling and water conservation.
Challenge

A stadium in Qatar required a solution to monitor the consumption of chilled water to enhance cooling system performance and meet sustainability targets.

Solution

Dynasonics® TFX-5000 Ultrasonic Clamp-on Flow Meter

Results

The implementation of non-invasive flow meters enabled clearer chilled water insight, reduced losses and improved HVAC efficiency to support long-term sustainability.

Qatar is a hot, dry desert nation on the western coast of the Arabian Gulf, where water scarcity and extreme temperatures shape infrastructure priorities. With limited natural freshwater resources, the country relies heavily on desalinated seawater to support its growing population. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 40°C (104°F), making air conditioning essential across public buildings and major sporting venues. Because chilled water HVAC systems require significant energy and water, improving efficiency is crucial to reduce operating costs, conserve resources and support long-term sustainability goals.

As a passionate sporting nation, the country has become recognized as a center for international excellence and now hosts several state-of-the-art stadiums and training facilities. Among these venues, one major stadium required clearer chilled water visibility, as system optimization had become increasingly important due to the scale of the cooling network and the operational demands of a large, multi-use facility.

Stadium Cooling Demands and Operational Complexity

Managing HVAC systems within a stadium of this size and purpose is complex. During events, different areas of the venue serve different functions, with each zone having its own heating and cooling requirements based on occupancy and activity. Individual spaces—including the pitch, locker rooms, concourses, restaurants and office areas—experience varying cooling loads throughout the day.

In a region where extreme temperatures shape infrastructure priorities, the operations team needed a way to tailor chilled water flow to the precise needs of each area rather than cooling the entire building to one temperature. Improving zone-level control was essential to reduce unnecessary energy use, support comfort and avoid overcooling in lower-demand spaces.

Value of Flow Monitoring in Stadium HVAC Systems

Flow monitoring supplies clear, real-time insight into the chilled water network. With accurate visibility of flow conditions, the operators can quickly adjust cooling output, improve responsiveness and match HVAC performance to actual facility needs.

Key operational advantages include:

Key operational advantages of flow monitoring in commercial and industrial HVAC chilled water systems include System Optimization, Energy Efficiency and Leak Prevention. These benefits improve comfort, lower pumping effort, reduce energy consumption and protect water resources.

System Optimization Precise chilled water flow measurement enables the system to deliver the correct volume to each zone, ensuring critical spaces—such as locker rooms and the pitch—stay cooler than concourses and restaurants. This level of zoning control improves comfort, reduces pump effort and lowers overall water and energy consumption across the venue.
Energy
Efficiency
Real-time flow data supports more energy-efficient HVAC operation throughout the stadium. Continuous monitoring identifies issues such as scaling, coil fouling and component degradation that reduce chiller and pump performance. By aligning chilled water flow with actual cooling demand, facility managers lower energy use, improve return temperatures and significantly reduce operating costs.
Leak
Prevention
Accurate visibility strengthens leak detection within the chilled water loop, revealing small losses before they escalate into major failures or shutdowns. Preventing chilled water leaks is especially important in the region for conserving resources, reducing makeup water demand and supporting long-term sustainability.

Selecting a Non-Invasive Flow Monitoring Solution

For this stadium, monitoring chilled water flow was essential to maintain system integrity, improve HVAC responsiveness and identify inefficiencies or leakage within the distribution network. With energy and water conservation being major priorities in Qatar, the operations team required a metering solution that could provide reliable, real-time data without interrupting facility operations.

After evaluating available technology options, the stadium partnered with Badger Meter and selected the Dynasonics® TFX-5000 Ultrasonic Clamp-on Flow Meter from the BlueEdge® portfolio. The TFX-5000 was chosen for its accuracy, durability and ability to deliver continuous flow data across large-scale chilled water systems.

The non-invasive clamp-on design allowed the meters to be installed directly onto the exterior of live pipes, eliminating the need for shutdowns or pipe cutting. This enabled installation on a fully operating chilled water system, avoiding downtime and keeping cooling service uninterrupted across the stadium. With no moving parts and minimal maintenance requirements, the TFX-5000 supports long-term system reliability while lowering lifecycle cost.

The meter’s BACnet certification and compatibility with multiple communication protocols enable seamless integration with the existing building management system to enhance data visibility. In addition, the meter supports encoder output for use with ORION® Cellular Endpoints and Badger Meter software platforms, providing a complete, connected solution for detailed flow analysis.

Results: Greater Visibility, Reliability and Sustainability

Today, Badger Meter flow monitoring technology is a core component of the stadium’s chilled water infrastructure. More than 100 TFX-5000 meters are installed throughout the facility, giving operators full visibility and control over the HVAC system.

The real-time flow insight these meters provide allows the operations team to fine-tune cooling output, reduce energy consumption and better manage chiller and pump performance. Early identification of leaks and system discrepancies also helps prevent water loss and protects valuable desalinated water resources—an essential sustainability priority in Qatar.

Through enhanced flow monitoring and improved chilled water management, the stadium has increased HVAC efficiency, reduced energy consumption and strengthened overall sustainability. This project demonstrates how advanced flow metering supports efficient cooling system operation in modern sports venues—particularly within regions where environmental stewardship and resource conservation are essential.
