Bisulfide and Hydrogen Sulfide (HS⁻ / H₂S) are sulfur-containing compounds commonly found in various industrial processes, wastewater systems, and natural environments. Hydrogen sulfide is notorious for its distinct odor of rotten eggs and its toxic properties, posing risks to both human health and the environment. Bisulfide, on the other hand, is its conjugate base, often found alongside hydrogen sulfide and contributing to overall sulfur compound levels in aqueous systems.

Exposure to hydrogen sulfide, even at low concentrations, can cause respiratory irritation, nausea, and in severe cases, respiratory paralysis or death. Furthermore, both hydrogen sulfide and bisulfide can corrode metals, leading to infrastructure damage in industrial settings and municipal wastewater systems. Monitoring and controlling their concentrations are critical in industrial operations, wastewater treatment plants, and environmental monitoring.
